21 Kilometres, One Big Smile: My Half Marathon Story

Sundown Run 2023 at Karma Lakelands, Gurgaon transcended mere competition for me — it was a tender homage to resilient, subtle transformations. Two years ago, I weighed 122 kg, grappling with chronic asthma. Even basic acts like climbing stairs felt like battles. I began a gradual shift: smaller portions, increased walks, and a vow to persist. By 2023, I had shed 40 kg, reaching 85 kg. This journey felt consistent, not abrupt — a tapestry of minor decisions accumulating over time.

Training alongside my YCP colleagues became integral to this journey. We ran in unison, shared laughter, spurred one another on, and learned to heed our bodies. Asthma taught me to be mindful of my breath, so I incorporated breathing techniques and fundamental yoga postures. These habits enabled me to remain composed under pressure and breathe efficiently while running. Race day was humid and golden as the sun dipped below the horizon. The initial lap was arduous. My legs felt leaden and my lungs resisted, yet I chose to maintain a steady rhythm rather than rush. Small aids mattered: an energy drink, a banana, my teammates’ encouragement. I learned to divide the distance into digestible segments — tackling one kilometer at a time. Running with colleagues transformed the event into something warm, relatable. We weren’t competitors; we were a team, striving to finish together. When one slowed, we slowed in unison. Faced with a hill, we confronted it together. That camaraderie infused kindness into the experience.

Crossing the finish line did not erase my past — I still handle asthma and strive for my health daily. But that evening, I felt a sense of pride and tranquility. The marathon reaffirmed my insights: genuine change stems from consistent modest efforts, not fleeting instances. Yoga instilled patience and steadfast dedication; running imparted resilience and humility. Both taught me self-compassion. Sundown Run represented more than 21 kilometers. It served as a poignant reminder: keep appearing, breathe, and honor the gradual journey.
