This year’s Dussehra celebrations at the temple in Medan were an unforgettable blend of devotion, energy, and cultural heritage. I had the privilege of contributing alongside my colleagues from GMR, helping organize the festivities and ensuring every ritual resonated with its traditional significance.The day began with preparations for the Dandiya night, but the true heart of the celebration was the Ravan Dahan. The temple came alive with the rhythmic chants of mantras, the resonant sound of conch shells, and the crackling of ceremonial fire. The air was thick with devotion and anticipation as the community gathered to witness the symbolic triumph of good over evil.One of the most physically and spiritually engaging moments was carrying the heavy chariot of Ravana around the temple.

The sheer effort required — coordinating with fellow volunteers, balancing the weight, and keeping the procession synchronized — was a profound reminder of the collective energy and commitment that Indian rituals demand. Every step reverberated with chants of victory and moral resolve, turning physical exertion into a meditative, almost transcendental experience.The culmination of the evening was the effigy’s fiery descent, a spectacular Ravan Dahan surrounded by cheers, prayers, and the mesmerizing glow of flames. Seeing the community come together, chanting in unison, and celebrating the moral victory of good over evil was incredibly moving. It was not just a ritual; it was a live embodiment of culture, teamwork, and devotion.
